Bravo 5: Homeland

Where home meets harmony: experience the feeling of home with music like Dvorak’s Symphony No. 7 and “Chansons de la mer Acadienne” by Composer-in-Residence Frédéric Chiasson of Lamèque, NB.

Program

Jean Sibelius (1865 - 1957)

    • Early in the nineteenth century, Finland, under Swedish control for seven centuries, became part of the Russian Empire

    • In 1899, as nationalist fervour was growing, Jean Sibelius composed Finlandia

    • In order to avoid Russian censorship, the piece’s title had to be disguised

    • Famous alternate titles: Happy Feelings at the awakening of Finnish Spring, and A Scandinavian Choral March

    • Finlandia has persisted as a concert favourite around the world and is now an informal national anthem in Finland

Frédéric Chiasson (b. 1978)
