Early in the nineteenth century, Finland, under Swedish control for seven centuries, became part of the Russian Empire
In 1899, as nationalist fervour was growing, Jean Sibelius composed Finlandia
In order to avoid Russian censorship, the piece’s title had to be disguised
Famous alternate titles: Happy Feelings at the awakening of Finnish Spring, and A Scandinavian Choral March
Finlandia has persisted as a concert favourite around the world and is now an informal national anthem in Finland
